The Worst State in America? Tennessee Must Be Doing Something Wrong

Every now and then, a ranking comes out declaring Tennessee one of the “worst states” in America. And every time I see it, I have the same reaction:

Have these people actually been here?

Because if Tennessee is the worst, then someone is going to have to explain why people keep moving here in record numbers.

Apparently, we’re suffering through low property taxes, no state income tax, beautiful rolling hills, lakes, rivers, mountain views, a thriving economy, world-class music, incredible food, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Sounds absolutely terrible.

Let’s start with the scenery. In one day, you can watch the sunrise over farmland, spend the afternoon on the lake, and catch a sunset in the mountains. The Great Smoky Mountains remain the most visited national park in America, and Middle Tennessee offers a blend of natural beauty and small-town charm that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Then there’s affordability. While much of the country struggles with skyrocketing costs, Tennessee continues to offer opportunities for families, retirees, and first-time buyers to achieve homeownership. People aren’t leaving Tennessee in search of a better life—they’re moving here to find one.

The job market continues to attract major employers. Communities are growing. New businesses are opening. Infrastructure is expanding. And despite all that growth, many Tennessee towns still maintain the sense of community that makes people feel like they belong.

Of course, no state is perfect. Every place has challenges. But calling Tennessee one of the worst states in America feels a little like calling sweet tea a bad beverage. You can say it, but most Tennesseans are probably going to laugh.
